Travel Back in Time with the Swipe of a Finger: Exploring Old Tainan through Historical Maps

The Tainan Historical Maps application offers a fascinating juxtaposition of historical maps and photographs spanning from 1875 to 1978, set against the backdrop of contemporary Google Maps and Street View. By utilizing a mobile device's positioning capabilities, users have the unique opportunity to compare historical and current visuals as they explore the streets of Tainan, effectively enabling them to "travel in time" and experience the city's past charm.

This app features eleven distinct maps of Tainan's streets from various periods, meticulously curated with contributions from the Academia Sinica Center for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (RCHSS). The maps cover an area approximately within Tainan's city limits. Furthermore, it includes 129 archival photographs sourced from esteemed institutions such as the Academia Sinica Institute of Taiwan History, the National Taiwan Library, and the National Taiwan University Library—showcasing scenes of official buildings and bustling street shops.
